Writing my ongoing book, Forbidden Tree, has drawn me into an unexpected yet profound journey, compelling me to seek inspiration in places I’ve never ventured before. Recently, I’ve been captivated by the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, a genre to which I now feel deeply indebted. It’s as though I’ve become part of a sacred congregation — believers united in the search for a singular light. The feeling is electrifying, almost transcendent.
In my superstitious musings, I’ve come to theorize that rock ‘n’ roll endures because it reveals truths at the very core of existence. Watching concerts on YouTube has only deepened my awe. The sheer magnitude of the crowds, their raw emotions laid bare, is nothing short of divine. Strangers holding hands, tears flowing freely, voices raised in unison — it’s a sacred testament to the power of music to connect and heal.
Another genre that moves me in a similar way is alternative music. Both rock ‘n’ roll and alternative delve into unvarnished emotion and truth, inspiring me to write with the same fearless authenticity. These genres remind me of something essential: at our core, we are all seekers of truth. We want to feel understood, to know we’re not alone in the chaos of the world.
Through their melodies and lyrics, they create belonging — a home for the soul. If that isn’t divine, I don’t know what is.
