‘The Hotel Room’ by Anton Machek

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to interpret the lyrics to music as well as study them to develop my writing voice. Ever since I’ve known myself, this has been my practice.

When I visit my parents, we share music we love — and I remember (as if it were yesterday) hearing the song “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell distinctly. It’s one of those songs that resonated deeply with me, especially as a child, because of how much I related to the blatant and wild lyrics. I loved it! It was as if for the first time, I could breathe a sigh of relief I didn’t know I needed to release. The upbeat tempo makes it a great song to dance to and let yourself go crazy but I went deeper because I found truth in them. And the truth is that — I do feel watched sometimes.

There are countless conspiracy theories out there that speak to being watched through your devices and covert operations. I, for one, don’t allow myself to get too taken up with this because it’s unfair not to grant yourself the opportunity to be authentic in fear of being watched. Still, there’s the little voice in the back of my mind that asks the question of its validity.

The truth is, we live in a world today where we are being monitored (knowingly). When we leave our homes, we interact with others, we turn on our vehicles, and the GPS guides us to our destination…
